Why Yemen, and why sidr

1 min read

Yemen's dry valleys grow sidr and sumr trees that have fed regional beekeeping for centuries. The sidr tree blooms for only a short season each year, in terrain that is demanding to work. Genuine sidr honey from a named valley — like Duaan — is scarce for honest reasons: a short bloom, hard harvests, small batches.

The sumr tree is the region's other pillar: hardy and thorned, blooming reliably where sidr is scarce. Sumra honey runs brighter and softer than sidr, which is why families keep it for the everyday table while rarer grades wait for guests.

Key points

  • Sidr: dark amber, intense aroma, short seasonal bloom.
  • Sumr: bright golden, smooth, the everyday honey of the region.
  • Both are imported from Yemen and bottled in small batches.
